When it comes to travelling smart there are plenty of tips and tricks to help you navigate your way around airports, towns etc. Now with the help of Ovis you can be guided to your departure gate by your suitcase!
Ovis’ manufacturer ForwardX is a company focusing on artificial intelligence (AI) used in self-driving technology to enhance people’s lives with robotic products.
The Ovis can charge your phone or tablet as can many other smart luggage products plus it can weigh your luggage which is a first.
The main advantage of the Orvis is the ability to follow you and avoid obstacles leaving you hands free to deal with gizmos, passport, tickets etc. It has GPS tracking which allows it to travel next to you so that you don’t have to look over shoulder to check it’s still there. However, it comes with a bracelet that will alert you if your Ovis is more than 2 metres away.
The big question is whether travellers will be prepared to pay around £800 for the convenience of having self-driving luggage and not be put off by the sideways glances from other travellers wondering what is happening.
In May 2018, ForwardX announced that it had raised $10 million in series A funding having previously raised $1 million in Angel round in 2016. The Orvis is in production and available to pre-order with a hefty discount of 41% making it cost only £400 for early adopters.
If you don’t like the idea of your luggage following you around the airport but like the convenience of being able to charge your phone then there some alternative products on the market. The Away Carry-On, has all the usual compact design, 4 wheels, separate laundry bag. It also comes with a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) approved battery that you can use to charge your gadgets. The Away is also more affordable retailing at around £220 for the small Carry-On version and £275 for a medium case.
