Can you arrive early for airport parking?

Mark Holmes
Short answer: usually yes, but not always for free. Whether you can arrive early for pre-booked airport parking depends on the car park, and some charge extra if you turn up before your booked time.
Here is what to check before you travel, and what a few airports say about it.
The short version
- Most self-park car parks let you arrive early. Many allow a window before your booked time, and that window differs between car parks.
- Arriving early can cost extra, especially if it pushes you into an extra day.
- Meet and greet and valet parking are different. A driver has to be there to take your keys, so check your confirmation or contact the car park before you turn up early.
- Your booking confirmation is the document that counts. If it does not say, ask before you travel.
Why arriving early can cost extra
Car parks usually charge in blocks of 24 hours counted from your booked arrival time. If you arrive early enough to start a new 24-hour block, you can be charged for an extra day. This is why "a couple of hours early" can be fine in one car park and cost a full day in another.
What some airports say
These are the airports' own words, checked on 19 October 2026. They describe the airports' own car parks and can change, so treat them as examples of how it works, not as a rule for every car park.
Gatwick. Gatwick Airport says you can access its car park up to two hours before the time on your order confirmation. It also says its prices apply to 24-hour periods, so if arriving earlier runs into a new 24-hour period you pay for an extra day. If you come back later than planned, Gatwick charges an overstay fee for each day you are late. Its published daily overstay amounts are:
- Short Stay: £50 a day
- Long Stay, Mid Stay South and Robotic parking: £15 a day
- Valet parking: £30 a day
- Mid Stay North: £60 a day
For Gatwick valet bookings, the airport asks you to email early@times24.co.uk with your registration and booking reference if you will be early or late.
Stansted. Holiday Extras says on its Stansted airport parking FAQ page that you can arrive early at Stansted, but it depends on the provider, and that some providers allow you to arrive a few hours early without extra charges.
Edinburgh. Edinburgh Airport lists "Arrive early: Yes" for its Mid Stay car park, but the page does not say how early or what it costs. Check your own booking terms.
If your flight is delayed and you come back late
Late is a separate question from early. At Stansted, Holiday Extras says a delayed flight is not a problem and the car parks will look after your car until you come back. It says you pay for the extra hours or days at the car park's local rate when you return. At Gatwick, the overstay fees above apply.
So if you can see your return date might slip, find out the car park's late-return charge before you go. Gatwick, for example, says you can extend a booking through myGatwick. Check the car park's own terms.
Changing or cancelling a booking
If your plans change, the rules are set by the car park and the type of booking. Gatwick, for example, says bookings made on its own website can be changed or cancelled up to 24 hours before your arrival time, with a £5 admin fee for changes by phone. Some bookings cannot be changed at all, and those are sometimes cheaper because of that. Check whether yours is flexible before you pay. You can manage your booking from the site.
Booking late or turning up on the day
If your plans are last minute, the same advice holds: book first, then check the early arrival and late return terms on the confirmation. Turning up without a booking usually costs more than pre-booking, and in busy periods car parks can be full.
Early flight and a long drive?
If your flight is very early, arriving a few hours before your booked time is not always the answer. A hotel with parking the night before can be simpler. See the airport hotels page for options.
