Purple Parking, the longest running and largest off-airport car parking company at Heathrow has sadly had to call in the administrators after amassing debts of £2 million. The company was setup 25 years ago and since expanded its operation from the Heathrow base to 26 airports across the UK.
Travellers returning to the UK faced long waits to get their keys back after staff had walked out due to the company being in administration. However, this proved to be a temporary situation as service returned to normal following the purchase of Purple Parking’s website on Thursday by Holiday Extras who said that all 36 staff would keep their jobs.
Parking4less has been offering airport car parking with Purple Parking since 2000. Purple Parking has always been a popular choice with our customers being very competitive with on-airport car parks at Heathrow and other UK airports. We’re very pleased that Holiday Extras have stepped in to rescue the brand as we have worked with Holiday Extras for the same amount of time and know them to be an excellent provider of airport parking.
The chief executive of Holiday Extras Matthew Pack said, “Our acquisition of Purple Parking’s online assets is focused on providing continuity of service for Purple Parking’s customers, suppliers and distributors. Whilst the pre-pack purchase sees us responsible for new bookings made from 3rd November via the brand, we are also focussed on ensuring that every customer that had an existing booking with Purple Parking, has their parking arrangements honoured. Customers should travel as planned, Holiday Extras are here to answer any queries on 0800 083 9689 (freephone)”.
History of Purple Parking
The Purple Parking family business was started in 1925 by Jack Inwards with a garage in Ickenham, Middlesex.
Since then, the company run by one of Jack’s sons Michael, expanded the business by setting up a car storage business for London car dealers called Secure Storage Ltd. At its peak, the company was storing about 15,000 vehicles and in 1990 Michael started Secure Parking Ltd, an airport park and ride service for Heathrow.
With the advent of the internet and subsequent expansion across most UK airports the company was rebranded as Purple Parking.
Customers of Purple Parking will be familiar with the company mascott, a chauffeur dressed in purple, saluting and with armed extended, actually looking like he was thumbing a lift but probably intended to be a thumbs up for a good trip!
The chauffeur was probably a nod to Purple Parking’s meet and greet service, which was popular with business customers wanting a quick turn around at the airport when dropping off their cars.
At its peak, Purple Parking employed 800 staff and had 18,000 car parking spaces at Heathrow and Gatwick.
